Reporting directly to the Operations Manager, responsible for assisting in the oversight in animal-related shelter operations, including supervision and training of staff, volunteers, and fosters regarding animal care, ensuring safe operations and to uphold the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter (WCRAS) mission and promote its goals. Serves as liaison to the Williamson County Facilities Department. THIS POSITION IS FUNDED TO BEGIN ON/AFTER OCTOBER 1, 2023.

  • Monitors the general health of shelter animals, ensures nutritional and housingneeds are met, alerts medical team to any medical needs observed
  • Inspects shelter daily to ensure proper care of animals, staff productivity and safety, cleanliness, and adherence to all state guidelines regarding operations
  • Supervises and trains animal care staff within the facility, directing work, providing continual feedback, and evaluations
  • Supervises volunteers within the facility, directing work, providing continual feedback
  • Hires, schedules, promotes, and disciplines animal care staff
  • Monitors timecards for all animal care staff, and approves and enters time off requests
  • Conducts senior animal care staff meetings to review procedures and workplace issues, and facilitate improvements and morale
  • Ensures shelter software is consistently utilized, updated, and audited
  • Oversees animal custodial and remedial care
  • Coordinates and conducts transfers of animals with local animal welfare organizations, including suitability evaluations of impacted animals, around the clock
  • Provides 24/7 response to foster families on emergency basis for medical needs and/or approval of emergency medical treatments at alternative facilities in absence of Operations Manager
  • Reports needed repairs to the Williamson County Maintenance Department or proper third-party company
  • Keeps track of maintenance agreements between the shelter and third-party companies
  • Establishes, strengthens, and maintains relationships with community agencies, animal welfare organizations, and professional associations
  • Reports all loss, risk, and safety issues or conditions to Operations Manager
  • Ensures compliance of shelter standard operating guidelines and shelter policy within animal care staff
  • Participates in continuing education opportunities to ensure compliance with industry standards, and to remain current on animal care/control issues
  • Educates the community about shelter programs
  • Acts as temporary Operations Manager, making all operational decisions, in absence of Operations Manager
  • Fills in for vacant Senior Animal Care and Animal Care positions as needed
  • Attends all meetings and trainings, as required

  • Position involves prolonged sitting at a workstation, visual examination of documents, reaching, walking, twisting, bending, standing and occasional lifting/carrying
  • Position requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine motor coordination
  • Position involves lifting and carrying of animals and equipment weighing up to fifty (50) pounds, or up to one hundred (100) pounds with assistance, and exertion of up to twenty-five (25) pounds of force to move objects
  • Ability to hear and/or see alert cues regarding animal and staff security
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, stress, and deadlines


  • Work tasks are conducted indoors and outdoors
  • May work outside in inclement weather, including extreme heat, cold and wet conditions
  • Frequent handling of animals, including contact with waste and blood
  • Exposure to unpleasant smells and a noisy and wet environment associated with a shelter
  • Frequent exposure to animals that are agitated or injured that may attempt to bite or scratch


  • Work outside of regular shelter hours is required; on-call 24/7 as emergency care liaison
  • Essential personnel for emergency situations, at discretion of Operations Manager

  • High school diploma or equivalent and three (3) years of animal welfare/community work OR four (4) years in animal health/behavior; OR an equivalent combinations of education and experience
  • Four (4) years of supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of animal health and well-being, including nutritional needs, common animal diseases and behavioral issues, proper and safe handling and restraints, and care for sick/injured/fractious animals
  • Ability to identify signs and symptoms of animal illnesses, injuries, and behavioral issues
  • Ability to work in a high-volume, fast-paced environment
  • Basic computer skills, to include knowledge of Microsoft Office

  • Valid driver’s license 


  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Prior experience with Oracle software, Kronos software, and PetPoint
  • Bilingual communication
