Overview

The County of San Luis Obispo Health Agency is actively recruiting for Communicable Disease/Immunization Nurses (County Classification: Community Health Nurse I/II OR Public Health Nurse I/II/Sr). The Communicable Disease program provides mandated oversight and follow up of Title 17 reportable diseases. The position also performs clinical services including childhood vaccines, flu, and travel immunizations and provides education and follow-up with the community and medical community. This recruitment may be used to fill future permanent, temporary, substitute or limited term vacancies within the County. 

The current vacancies are for full-time and part-time positions in San Luis Obispo and Grover Beach.

Communicable Disease Nursing:

  • Impacts the well-being of hundreds of individuals and community members through surveillance and monitoring of disease trends in the community.

  • Positively impacts the community through epidemiologic investigations, interventions and treatment.

  • Provides case management and develops treatment plans in collaboration with medical professionals and multidisciplinary team members.

  • Provides immunization and health screenings to all populations in the community.

The Ideal Candidate

Candidates may qualify as Community Health Nurse or Public Health Nurse based on the minimum qualifications below:

Community Health Nurse I:  Two years of professional nursing experience (A Bachelor of Science in Nursing or related public health/care field may substitute for one year of experience)
 
Community Health Nurse II:  Either A:  One year of experience as a Community Health Nurse I, OR B: Three years of professional nursing experience.  (A Bachelor of Science in Nursing or related public health/care field may substitute for one year of experience.  A higher level degree may substitute for an additional year of experience.)

Licenses and Certificates

Possession of a valid California license as a Registered Nurse.  



Public Health Nurse I:  Possession of a valid California license to practice as a Registered Nurse AND a California Public Health Nurse Certificate.  No experience required.
 
Public Health Nurse II:  Either A: Two years of experience as a Public Health Nurse I; OR B: Two years of public health related experience in a public or private health care setting.
 
Senior Public Health Nurse: Either A: One year of experience as a Public Health Nurse II; OR B: Three years of public health related experience in a public or private health care setting.  (Possession of a California credential to practice as a school nurse or an advanced degree in public health nursing or a public health related field may be substituted for one year of experience.)

Licenses and Certificates

Possession of a valid California license to practice as a Registered Nurse is required at time of application and must be maintained throughout employment.  A license in probationary status is a disqualification.  Possession of a valid California Public Health Nurse Certificate is required.  

Possession of a valid driver's license may be required at the time of application.  Possession of a valid CALIFORNIA driver's license may be required at the time of appointment and, if required, must be maintained throughout employment.
