Job Summary
STUDENT FELLOWSHIP DESCRIPTIONCommunity Outreach Fellow  The Office of Supervisor Nora Vargas, Vice Chair of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, is seeking a highly motivated and creative Community Outreach Fellow to assist with a fast-paced community outreach operation. The Community Outreach Fellow will work with the community outreach team to shape community engagement, work on organizing the community for policy initiatives and represent the supervisor in the community. The Community Outreach Fellow must be a hard worker, team player and have an interest in making a difference in our communities, RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Working closely with the Community Team, conduct research on areas of high priority for the Supervisor and draft memo’s accordingly
  • Regularly update trackers for various community events 
  • Monitor e-comments/letters of support and ensure they are routed to the appropriate staff for awareness
  • Attend community team meetings and assist with note taking
  • Keep abreast of local, national, and international news and local community events 
  • Draft 
  • Assist with administrative work, editing documents, and general support for the community team
  • Excellent attention to detail and proof-reading skills
  • Strong critical thinking and writing skills, with the ability to adapt content to different audiences
  • Adept use of Microsoft Office Suite/Adobe software (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Adobe Creative Suite)
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently and within a team in a fast-paced, high-expectation environment
  • Spanish speaker and writer strongly preferred

Applicants must be full-time students at a local high school, vocational program, job readiness program, or an accredited college or university with at least a 2.0 semester/quarter grade point average (GPA). 

Payrate for Academic Fellows is set by County ordinance and based on number of academic units completed.

As part of the County of San Diego’s pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position.
