We are looking for a Director, Payroll & Total Rewards, to oversee all payroll transactions and maintain effective payroll procedures for our organization. 

The Director, Payroll & Total Rewards responsibilities include auditing the entire payroll process, approving exemptions and salary changes and setting guidelines for all procedures around employee compensation. To be successful in this role, you should have previous experience managing payroll for a mid-size organization and have excellent attention to detail. 

You will ensure we compensate all employees in a fair, accurate and timely manner. 


  • Responsible for oversight of all payroll processing runs (weekly, biweekly, off cycle) 

  • Set up and maintain functional payroll systems and workflows 

  • Lead and Manage department including Payroll Specialists, Analyst, and Benefits Manager, work closely with Talent Acquisition to benchmark positions and develop total reward packages including base, long-term equity, and variable compensation 

  • Train employees who are involved in payroll on tax regulations and best practices 

  • Manage key relationships across national shared services teams in HR (Human Resources), Finance, Operations, and Legal in support of payroll & benefits processing 

  • Build relationships with third party payroll system providers in processing employees’ time, bonus payments, deductions, garnishments, pay adjustments, as well as auditing and establishing compliant pay practices 

  • Create and maintain positive relationships with Division leaders to develop strong communication between the payroll team and operating departments 

  • Ensure proper payment of US (United States) employees in a multi-state environment, audit payroll transactions to ensure all amounts and payment dates are accurate 

  • Prepares and reviews management payroll reports for exempt and non-exempt national workforce 

  • Ensure appropriate oversight of the administration of the health plans, which include medical, dental, vision, life, disability, 401(k) and other benefit plans 

  • Responsible for payroll system maintenance and implementation of any system improvements and upgrades 

  • Review and approve one-time or permanent changes in payroll (e.g., salary increases, tax deductions, bonuses, commissions, benefit enrollments) 

  • Adapt quickly and effectively to procedural changes and assist with other special projects 

  • Monitor standards, delegation of daily work and running of all reports for the department 

  • Ensure compliance with federal and state reporting requirements including ACA, FLSA and Equal Pay Act, DOL, Wage & Hour, company policy and other regulations as they relate to compensation 

  • Maintain payroll records and databases to ensure efficient responses to all payroll related requests and ensures all payroll data is kept current 

  • Streamline and document payroll procedures  

  • Partner with Finance to develop any compensation accruals and provide information for forecasts 

  • In partnership with Finance and Human Resources, support the administration of the company’s equity plan 

  • Ensure that benefit programs are competitive and cost-effective by monitoring and analyzing programs, evaluating expenses, plan design effectiveness, and identifying opportunities for improving designs 

  • Creates policies to maintain compliance with applicable regulation laws and other federal & state reporting by monitoring and responding to new and emerging benefits legislation 

  • Streamline and document payroll procedures to ensure compliance with relevant SOX controls 

  • Manage payroll discrepancies quickly and efficiently 

  • Ensure compliance with all payroll and tax laws 

  • Collaborate with Finance and HR leadership to create payroll reports and forecasts 

  • Prepare onboarding material that will help new hires understand the company’s compensation and benefits policies 

  • Coordinate and lead internal external audits for payroll and benefits sectors 

  • Answer payroll-related questions from employees 

  • Stay up to date with labor legislation and any changes in employee insurance and tax regulations 

Financial Responsibilities: Manages the overall payroll and compensation administration for national workforce. 


  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, Accounting, or related field of study; experience and/or other training/certification may be substituted for formal education. 

  • At least 7+ years’ experience in a payroll supervisory position 

  • Hands-on experience with payroll software like Workday, UKG or similar platforms 

  • Strong familiarity with HRIS (Human Resources Information Systems), technical analysis and business processes 

  • In-depth knowledge of payroll legislation and tax regulations 

  • A high level of discretion and integrity when handling sensitive employee information 


  • Understanding and experience with Workday HCM (Human Capital Management), Payroll, and Benefit business processes. 

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in enterprise data management, data governance, data quality principles and methodologies. 

  • Must have knowledge of HR, Payroll, and Benefits business processes as well as intra and inter-departmental functions. 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 

  • Demonstrated ability regarding attention to detail and understanding how data integrity affects payroll administration 

  • Demonstrated ability to work with all internal levels within a given organization. 

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a high-profile, high-pressure environment effectively. 

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with key internal and/or external stakeholders. 

  • Must have strong managerial skills to effectively direct a staff of professional and technical employees in implementing the short- and long-term goals and direction for responsibility. 

  • National benefit experience including knowledge of health and welfare plans, leaves, time off practices and retirement plans. 

  • Experience with compensation & benefit design and execution nationally and in emerging geographical markets is a significant plus. 

  • Demonstrated ability to complete short- and long-term projects effectively and as efficiently as possible. 

  • Demonstrated analytical capabilities and quantitative skills. 

  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or comparable applications, i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. 

  • Highest level of integrity and management of confidential information. 

  • Travel may be required to other work locations or other external sites.
