 The Fresno County Department of Internal Services is seeking experienced carpentry professionals interested in developing their career as a Maintenance Carpenter
The desired candidate will possess journey-level experience and employ appropriate techniques to accomplish assigned tasks, which will include remodeling, finishing, and repairing County buildings, structures, furniture and appurtenances; and performing related work as required.

As a condition of employment, selected candidates may be required to obtain and maintain security clearance to access Fresno County detention facilities. Fresno County detention facilities are "No Hostage" facilities. This means in the event you are taken hostage, the County will not bargain for your safe release.

NoteThe eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill both extra-help and permanently allocated positions. Individuals selected for extra-help appointment may be transitioned to a permanently allocated position at a later date as authorized by the Fresno County Personnel Rules.

Positions in this classification are in Medical Group III - Heavy Physical Activity (Personnel Rule 8). This group includes positions which require heavy physical effort using arms, legs, back and trunk in frequent lifting, pushing, or pulling objects weighing (or offering resistance equivalent to) over 25 pounds. Generally, considerable bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, as well as standing and walking are involved. Physical stamina is usually required and explosive strength using bursts of energy may be required, depending upon specific position assignments.

Samples of Duties

  • Maintains, repairs and remodels County buildings and structures;
  • Constructs wooden and metal partitions;
  • Constructs, installs, repairs and/or replaces cabinets, tables, shelving units, bookcases, locks, doors, windows and closures;
  • Installs, repairs, and replaces flooring, ceilings, and roofing;
  • Fabricates concrete forms; pours/finishes concrete;
  • Installs metal studs, metal track, metal doorjambs, and drywall;
  • Orders equipment and supplies;
  • May respond to after-hour emergencies.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of
  • Materials, methods, and tools used in rough/finish carpentry work;
  • Rules, regulations, procedures, and codes pertaining to rough/finish carpentry work;
  • Proper use and operation of hand tools, as well as power tools, including their maintenance and repair;
  • On-the-job safety and use of personal protective equipment;
  • Design techniques including interpretation of blueprints, technical plans, drawings, models, and other construction documents.
 Skills/Abilities to:
  • Interpret work instructions and safety labels;
  • Interpret blueprint drawings and related construction documents;
  • Practice appropriate safety precautions and procedures;
  • Effectively operate hand and power tools, and other construction equipment used in rough/finish carpentry work;
  • Prepare rough sketches of work and estimates of material and labor;
  • Install or adapt equipment and technology to County facilities;
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all organizational levels, as well as with other agencies and the public;
  • Demonstrate and maintain a high degree of initiative, maturity, integrity, accountability, and good judgment;
  • Respond to after-hour emergencies.
Minimum Qualifications
OPTION 1:
 
Experience: Four (4) years of full-time, paid work experience as a carpenter which involved remodeling, finishing, and repairing buildings, structures, and appurtenances in a commercial and/or industrial setting.
 
OPTION 2:

 
Certification: Possession of a certificate of completion from a carpenter apprenticeship program recognized by the California Apprenticeship Council, the Federal Bureau of Apprenticeship Training, or a state apprenticeship council authorized by the Federal Bureau of Apprenticeship Training.
 
Experience: Two (2) years of full-time, paid work experience as a carpenter which involved remodeling, finishing, and repairing buildings, structures, and appurtenances in a commercial and/or industrial setting.
 
In addition to the options listed above, the following is also required:

 
License: Possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license, or equivalent.
Other: As a condition of employment, selected candidates may be required to obtain and maintain security clearance to access Fresno County detention facilities.
