Description of Job

This position is located in the Distribution Services Department of the Auraria Higher Education Center.  The purpose of this work unit is to circulate purchase order goods, mail parcels and supplies to end users in a timely basis while maintaining computer records for receiving and delivery.   This work unit also provides information to the appropriate department for all goods that require tracking through Central Receiving.

Materials Handler I – Campus Distribution Services

this position is responsible for the following:

  • Perform mail services as needed, assisting with courier route, sorting, mail pickup and delivery to the U.S.P.S.
  • Safely operate vehicles on roads and on a heavy congested campus by State laws and agency procedures.  Perform minor repairs and maintenance on motor vehicles. Vehicles must be kept clean and fluids (gas, oil, etc.) maintained up as vehicle requires.
  • Help customers with questions and deliveries on the phone, on campus and in the warehouse.  
  • Receive, identify, log, rank and stage for delivery all incoming items, including priority and airmail items.  Unload these items from trucks and trailers using forklift, pallet jacks, or by hand.  Scan or key in data to the Arrival computer system, which is used to track shipments received by the unit.
  • Deliver items received to the addressee on campus within a scheduled route time. Pre-determine how delivery will be made as to size of item and confinement of area to be delivered to as items can weight up to 2000 pounds or more at one time requiring the use of carts, forklift, pallet jacks, or by hand.
  • Scan and receive signature for all items delivered to the end user. Items will be delivered intact, without unpacking said item, unless a waiver form has been pre-signed by the addressee.
  • Other duties as assigned by lead worker or supervisor; including assisting Central Receiving. 

Additional Duties: Perform such other duties as are assigned from time-to-time by the direct supervisor and members of the AHEC leadership team. 

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (must be specifically demonstrated on application):  
  • One (1) year of experience which includes mail, package and equipment delivery, receiving and storing; including large and heavy items requiring use of carts, pallet jacks and other loading dock equipment.

  • Those candidates with previous mailroom/mail machine experience are strongly encouraged to apply.


  • Must maintain a valid and unencumbered Colorado driver license
  • The position requires ability to lift objects weighing up to 75 pounds
  • Must maintain their ability to stand for long periods of time as well as kneel, stoop, crouch, reach and grab in the performance of job-related duties.
  • Must be willing and able to physically maneuver and manipulate various hand tools (hand trucks, snips and banding tools) used in the performance of job-related duties
  • Must maintain their ability to perform the physical demands of this position which include physically manipulating and moving equipment, tools and supplies in excess of 100 lbs occasionally as well as items weighing up to 75 lbs on a more frequent basis.  
  • Must maintain possession of a current valid State of Colorado motor vehicle license. 
  • They must also maintain his/her ability to independently travel in the performance of job-related duties.
  • Must be willing and able to perform work duties while exposed to extremes in weather elements (i.e. snow in the winter, heat in the summer).
  • Willingness to adhere to all safety guidance material to include those regulating the handling and storage as well as movement of toxic substances such as chemicals and other materials
