Brief Position Overview:
The Phlebotomist supports patient care services provided by the Refugee Clinic. The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing clinical tasks in accordance with all Harris County Public Health (HCPH) and Refugee Health Screening Program protocols. This position will work with the clinical team to create and maintain efficient, patient-centered daily clinic operations while providing comprehensive public health services to all Harris County Public Health Refugee Clinic patients seeking refugee health screening services. 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist with program health screening by performing phlebotomy (including capillary and venous draws), urine collection, pregnancy tests, lead testing and vital signs.
  • Prepare and label samples (stools for parasite, blood, sputum, etc.) for transport to appropriate laboratories and maintain laboratory and exam rooms in a neat, clean, and orderly manner always stock with all the equipment necessary for client screening.
  • Verifies test requisitions and patient identification by comparing information with logs and EMR and bringing discrepancies to the attention of the appropriate personnel.
  • Explains sampling procedures to patients and tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection maintaining daily tallies of collections performed.
  • Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule, recording results in the logs and EMR, and identifying and reporting needed changes.
  • Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the provider, nurses, reference laboratory, referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification, and notifying supervisor of these orders.
  • Provide in-room support for all clinical staff during the clinic visits as needed.
  • Inventories supplies and forms; submits items for ordering, Assist with rotating dated stock to prevent loss and Perform quality assurance on all needed medical equipment.
  • Make home visits when necessary to retrieve medical records and obtain consents and/or collect specimens.
  • Other duties as assigned, including responding to an emergency event.

  • Highschool Diploma or GED required.
  • Six (6) months as a Medical Assistant and/ or Phlebotomist with experience in a medical office, hospital, or laboratory is required
  • Phlebotomist certification
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Certified
  • Valid TX Driver's License
