Overview

These are full-time (Professionals) positions in the City’s Development Services Department, Permits and Inspections Division. An individual in this position is responsible for ensuring compliance when reviewing applications, issuing building permits. Reporting relationship: Building Official

Examples of Work
  • Monitors the activities of the plan review center by enforcing city policies; solving problems; and scheduling work duties;
  • Reviews demolition permit applications, commercial building permit plans; researches building codes; enforces codes and regulations; provides written directions for the issuance of building permits;  
  • Writes reports explaining and interpreting building codes and regulations; conducts field inspections;
  • Provides technical explanations to architects, engineers and contractors; prepares and maintain plan log; and provides explanations of plan corrections or denials; 
  • Makes presentations to division staff; conducts meetings at job sites; conducts weekly staff meetings; 
  • Attends pre-application meetings and facilitates pre-construction meetings as needed; provides statistical reports;  
  • Conducts conference calls; responds to inquiries; assists in setting timed inspections;
  • Handles customer complaints by documenting the concern; investigating the problem; finding a solution; and conducting a follow up;
  • Assists the Building Official with budget preparation and management for the division;
  • Coordinates with all other departments involved in the building design and construction process concerning building inspections and permitting;
  • Conducts field inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial construction projects including structural, plumbing, mechanical and/or electrical installation;
  •  Issues Notices to Comply of Violations, as needed;
  • Represents the Building Official in his/her absence;
  •  Performs other duties assigned
  • Subject to 24-hour recall
Education, Experience, or Certification

Associate’s degree and a minimum of five (5) years relevant professional experience required.  State Plumbing License, a Plumbing Inspection Certificate, International Code Council Code Specialist designation for plans examination, Combination residential inspector, and/or Combination commercial inspector certification required or the ability to obtain licenses and certifications within 18 months of hire date required.

Supplemental Information

The Department of Human Resources & Organizational Development may consider an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.
