Thurston County Public Health and Social Services is hiring two (2) Specialized Recreation Leads for the Special Recreation program. Specialized Recreation provides recreation programs for ages sixteen (16) to adult who have special needs.
Specialized Recreation services provides recreation programs for people of all abilities with a primary goal of providing opportunities for learning and growth through the experience of recreation and leisure activities.

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to, the following:  
  • Assist supervisor and staff with planning, preparing, implementing, and leading programs and activities.
  • Participate in staff meetings and trainings.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and inclusive environment throughout each activity.
  • Assist participants with tasks.
  • Lead both large and small groups of program participants.
  • Follow current COVID-19 protocols at all times.

Come help bring specialized recreation and socialization services to those who need it most!  In this position you must be able to work flexible hours, mostly nights and weekends, organized in advance.
The Specialized Recreation program is currently working to bring back in person programming again. More information will be provided as it is made available.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two years of work experience in parks or recreation programs, providing assistance in planning, organizing, or implementing programs.
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License.
  • Have a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) / First Aid certification, or ability to obtain before hire date.

Desired Skills
  • Experience working with individuals with sensory, physical, or mental disabilities.
  • Ability to exercise mature judgment to ensure safety and enjoyment by program participants.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships and follow oral and written directions
  • Minimum of 21 years of age.
  • Minimum of six (6) months experience working with youth or adults, preferably in a lead capacity.
  • Experience participating and leading programs and activities for individuals with disabilities (physically, mentally, or sensory challenged) is preferred but not required.
